UI/UX Designer
Shaping an engaging AI-powered platform through user-centred design and dynamic storytelling
Project Info
Jumping in mid-project
Dream Lab is an interactive, AI-powered platform featured at the Draft Master Plan (DMP) 2025 Exhibition. It invites visitors to imagine and generate vivid concept designs for Singapore’s urban spaces.
I joined the Dream Lab project midway to assist the Lead UI/UX Designer during a critical phase with a tight deadline. With the launch set for the Exhibition on 25 June 2025, launched by Minister Chee Hong Tat, I had to quickly understand the existing work and workflows to contribute effectively.
What needed attention?
I took ownership of producing two multimedia assets, ensuring they aligned with the project’s goals and enhanced the overall experience. Alongside this, I led usability testing to uncover issues that informed final refinements.
I also contributed to refining the user experience through UI and layout improvements, while acting as a bridge between the client and design team. This involved relaying feedback, proposing solutions, and managing follow-ups, particularly when the lead designer was unavailable.
Showcase
Showcasing the experience
One of my major contributions was producing the screensaver promotional video. The challenge was to present the platform’s key features concisely and to deliver it within a very short timeframe. To overcome this, I chose to create the animations in Figma instead of After Effects, which significantly reduced production time. I recorded the animations natively and assembled the final video in Premiere Pro, using After Effects only for selective edits where necessary.
User Testing
Live user testing
As the launch approached, I co-led usability testing on the final hardware to observe natural interactions and uncover gaps. We used a mixed-methods approach with 10 participants across different groups, combining qualitative observations with quantitative scale ratings. While most findings pointed to backend software issues, three key usability issues emerged.
Refinement
Polishing the existing design
The platform had undergone multiple iterations, but the high profile launch demanded a polished, frictionless experience. Accessibility and usability were central, as the UI would appear on a 4 metre wide projection and a 75 inch touchscreen. UI elements had to be carefully sized to ensure readability, discoverability, and ease of interaction.
Impact
What my contributions achieved
Bridging the Gap
Acting as the communication bridge between the client and the design team ensured that priorities were always clear, and changes were implemented efficiently under a tight schedule. By relaying feedback accurately and proposing actionable solutions, I helped the team stay aligned with the client’s vision, reducing misunderstandings and enabling faster design iterations.
Making it Accessible
Refining the interface for large format touchscreens meant carefully considering how users would interact with the installation. By optimising readability, discoverability, and clarity, I ensured that the platform was intuitive and engaging for all visitors.
Capturing Attention
The one minute promotional video I produced became a key tool to attract and orient visitors. By showcasing the platform’s core features concisely, it provided an engaging preview that encouraged users to explore the interactive experience with confidence and curiosity.
Reflect
Learning to navigate complexity
With a lean team, I frequently communicated directly with stakeholders, discussing design updates and participating in user acceptance testing to ensure their feedback and requests were accurately reflected in the latest designs.
Through this process, I gained a deeper understanding of how multidisciplinary teams operate in agile workflows, and how thoughtful collaboration and communication are critical to a project’s success.
